Patricia Martin
Artist's Statement

The subject matter in my paintings are a vehicle for the emotion to be perceived
within the composition - an evocation rather than a representation.  The images
are a glimpse of a moment whose universal familiarity calls up a memory long
forgotten and often difficult to pinpoint but which has a left a residue of feeling
within the viewer.

To give concretion to intangible emotion, I try to let go of my rational mind and let
the body of the paint dictate the texture of the work and the movement of the
subject.  The images are rendered quickly through the use of light and shadow.
Sometimes the subject matter is based on realistic settings, sometimes realism is
as skewed as our dreams.  No matter what the subject matter is, I strive to reach
across cultures and idioms and portray the broad spectrum of feeling which all life
shares and in doing so, hope to speak to the collective conscious within us all,
finding a common ground without bias or opinion.
