Tracy McKay
I started painting in 2004 while taking a sabbatical from bike racing. I had just
finished a 3000 mile bike race called Race Across America and needed a break.
I still needed somewhere to direct my energy so I picked up the paints and it just
exploded out of me, I knew quickly what I wanted to paint, I can see in my mind's
eye and then it evolves on its own...With a brief notion and a strong impulse to
create, I layer my acrylics on roofing paper using my putty knife and my fingers,
The heat of the sun speeds up the drying process while I drag my putty knife and
fingers through the drying paint.
This provides unexpected opportunities for underlying colors to peek through the
wrinkled skin of the dry paint creating a jeweled appearance...

I try not to pay attention to rules or structure as a conscious process, I simply go in the direction of my
emotions and rampant thoughts of that moment. While remaining true to my methods, my approach otherwise
allows for my work to go in the direction it needs to go rather than forcing it into shape. There is a definite
re-occurring theme in my work which would best be described over a glass of wine or a cup of coffee...
