BILL CALDERINI

Springing fully formed from the forehead of Zeus, Bill Calderini landed on this planet with a resounding splat in the fall of 1963. A constant doodler for his entire life he briefly flirted with Fine Arts at the University of Montevallo in the early eighties, before pursuing a career in advertising. After THAT came to a rather abrupt end in the spring of this year he wandered forlorn and desolate until chancing upon Jennifer Harwell’s gallery one day. With a love for portrait work and a hyper realistic style, Jennifer gave him 2 hours, some tubes, some canvas and a palette knife and said “PAINT!”

The beast has awoken and he’s hungry. What is shown on these pages is mostly “class work” derived from my 2 hour weekly “therapy sessions” but I am now pursuing many different styles and techniques until I can settle on one that works best for me. My love for portraits has not waned, as at least one example posted here shows, and I plan to continue to pursue the elusiveness of the smile and the twinkle of the eye, but working in the abstract has opened my eyes to the sheer joy of putting paint on canvas in a free an unrestricted way that I have both come to respect and love.

I mostly work for fun and the pleasure of creating, but I am not opposed to making a little green along the way and I hope that I may one day have enough work to have a show and actually begin selling pieces.

Although my advertising career has resumed, I still plan on making painting one of the main priorities in my life. It’s a “work” that is not work and an endless sea of white canvas awaiting, and I plan on bending the laws of physics soon to have the opportunity to fill them all.
