Edna Hodgens is a painter and teacher who is driven by an incredible passion for self-expression through art. Her works are most often noted for; vibrant colors, bold, flowing lines, and movement.

Edna has studied art at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and the Birmingham Museum of Art. She has also studied with critically acclaimes artists; Xander Booker, Janet Tillery, John Wagnon, and Linda Vance. She has studied with Linda Vance at Lindarts Studio in Hoover, Alabama for the past six years. She credits Linda with teaching her so much about the use of color.

Edna is presently an Art Instructor for the Shelby County Arts Council and teaches Community Outreach classes funded by the Greater Birmingham Outreach Foundation. She has received many awards and recogntions for her work which may be found in corporate and private collections throughout the South.

Artist Statement:
When I paint, I am painting a beautiful moment in time. It will never be again but it is recorded forever in memory through my painting. I take great joy in the wonders and beauty of the world around me. My husband says I look at life through a child's eyes. I celebrate life with ecstasy and joy.

I paint obsessively, starting early so I have no interruptions and my mind has not yet been corrupted with thoughts of daily tasks. Then at night when the world sleeps, I paint again.

In my paintings I use mainly acrylics and oils. Color has always been my trademark. I love placing complementary colors next to each other. If you look carefully at my artwork, you can see repeated examples of this technique. It has a naturally pleasing effect on the eye. I also love painting with a palette knife. The subjects of my paintings usually center around nature and man's relationship to the natural world.

I am also a teacher. Teaching art gives me great joy. Seeing others becoming inspired to create and watching them grow as artists gives me great satisfaction.
